Fran will serve in conjunction with her husband Ron, who is currently on the Board.

Fran is retired from a 30 year career serving in managerial and executive positions in residential and health care facilities. She enjoys spending time with family, golfing and outdoor activities. Her and Ron have been involved with Brian's Foundation since the beginning and we are excited to have her on board!

20 Years-20 accomplishments

35 years ago today, Brian came into this world.

20 years ago this year, we established the Brian LaViolette Foundation.

When we established Brian's Foundation, we had no idea what would become of it. We had a vision of keeping our promise to him to accomplish great things in his name and memory, but we weren't sure how it would all go.

Establishing a non-profit 501c3 foundation was something we had never done. There were dozens of questions, but one stood out, 'would we continue with just one scholarship at Brian's High School or would we expand?' The only way to know was to try. So we did.

20 years, 20 milestone accomplishments

It is hard to single out 20 accomplishments over our 20 years as a Foundation, but again, we will try.

Building on the $21,000 we received at Brian's funeral, we successfully became a 501c3 Foundation, awarding our first Brian LaViolette Scholarship at DePere High School in 1993.
Creating "The Journey is the Reward Collection"-a series of inspirational prints and Green Bay Packers Hats embroidered with the Packer's NFL emblem.
Expanding from one scholarship to eight in 1997.
Partnering with Scholarships Inc. to award the Distinguished Student Awards in Brown and Door County, WI. We presented 26 scholarships in 1999!
That same year, on 9.9.99, we held our first Celebrity Autograph Auction, including a Mercedes Benz raffle.
Publishing "The Journey is the Reward" book, co-authored by Karoyn Gazella.
Having a successful "Journey to the Stars" event with Henry Winkler.. yes, the 'Fonz'.
Creating the Scholarship of Honor Program in 2003 to honor our military heroes.
Expanding worldwide to Poland, eventually awarding 7 annual scholarships there.
Hiring the Foundation's first and only full-time employee in 2006, Brian's Sister, Kim.
Spearheading the national 2007 Medal of Honor Convention in Green Bay, WI, involving the entire community and nation in 26 memorable events.
Expanding 'headquarters' to another rent-free location in North Carolina.
Establishing a scholarship in South Africa..
Being granted a Public Charity Foundation designation.
Trademarking "The Journey is the Reward".
Having part of our website in the Czech language after the General George Patton Scholarship was established in Pilsen, Czech Republic.
Honoring and remembering 30 others, in addition to Brian, with scholarships in their names.
Celebrating 'What's Right with America' on 11.11.11 inspiring a worldwide audience and awarding the first Brian LaViolette Spirit Awards.
2012 marks the year that we will grow and award scholarships in 13 states and 3 foreign countries.

Mike Colaillo, WWII Medal of Honor Recipient passes away at 86

We are sadden by the loss of Minnesota's last living Medal of Honor Recipients, Mike Colalillo. In 2005, Brian's Foundation established the Mike Colalillo Scholarship of Honor at Denfeld High School in Duluth, MN.

Mike graduated from Denfeld High School in 1944. One year later, while serving in World War II, Colalillo went above and beyond the call of duty leading his men on an attack against enemy forces in Germany. In the face of savage artillery, machinegun fire, and almost certain death, he was committed to protecting others on the battlefield, and our freedoms here at home. President Truman presented Colalillo the Medal of Honor on December 18, 1945.

Ben Fischl, 2008 Brian LaViolette Scholarship recipient came from Air Force Academy in Colorado to join us.

Mrs. Bradley, John Bradley's wife was the first to be escorted by Navy Chief Joel Stewart. John Bradley will always be remembered for helping raise the flag on Iwo Jima, but his greatest accomplishment during WWII was saving the lives of combat Marines, for which he received the Navy Cross.

The LaViolette's with Green Bay Packers, Donald Driver. He was our first "Brian LaViolette Spirit Award" recipient for his work in our community and his foundation who help and inspire the homeless.

Packers Donald Driver to Receive ‘Spirit Award’ on 11.11.11

We are proud to announce that the Green Bay Packers' Donald Driver (#80) will receive our first ever Brian LaViolette Spirit Award the night of 11.11.11!! Donald was chosen for his tireless work in helping the homeless, inspiring students and supporting community organizations and causes.

Donald Driver is one of those individuals who started with nothing and has worked hard to better not only his life but the lives of so many around him and we think he is the perfect choice for the Spirit Award.

Like all Packers fans worldwide, we are proud of Donald's great accomplishments on the field, but more importantly he was selected for the qualities he demonstrates off the field……his strength of character, perseverance, hard work, dedication, love of family and community spirit.

Other honorees have been selected in the fields of philanthropy, literature and community service and will be recognized during this historic evening.

The Schuler family has been in our lives since I was a young girl. Chris played soccer with Brian and our parents became good friends. Some of you remember that Chris' mom, Connie, joined our Board of Advisors a couple of years ago and Connie and her husband, Bill have always been very supportive of Brian's Foundation.

When Chris approached our family to see if he could also serve on our Board of Advisors, it didn't take long for us to decide what a wonderful fit this would be. Chris is Brian's first peer who will be on the board and we have our first 'mother/son' team.

Chris recently moved back to Green Bay after earning his MBA with an emphasis in Strategic Management and Finance from the University of Minnesota. After he received his BA from UW-Madison, Chris lived in Chicago for eight years, where he worked in Marketing.

When I asked Chris why he wanted to get involved with Brian's Foundation, he said "Since moving back to Green Bay, I have been looking to get involved with our community and having followed your foundation since it began, I wanted to get involved at a different level. It seemed like a good fit, because of my friendship with Brian for so many years and all the positive things you guys are doing."

We know Chris will bring a lot to Brian's Foundation as we continue to serve our future leaders.

Nainoa Hoe Scholarship of Honor presented by our next generation

The US Army ROTC program on the Manoa Campus of the University of Hawaii has a unique legacy. It is the only Army ROTC Unit authorized a "Campaign or Battle Streamer" earned in the days following the attack on Pearl Harbor 70 years ago.

On Friday another chapter opened in the Warrior Battalion's proud legacy. It marked the beginning of a journey of service for another proud son of Hawaii selected as this year’s Nainoa Hoe Scholarship of Honor Recipient, James C. Mahoney.

James C. Mahoney, a 2011 graduate of Roosevelt High School was selected for his academic achievements, his leadership in the Hawaii Junior ROTC program and his dedication to public service.

This year was also extra special because sponsor and board member of Brian’s Foundation, Ohelo Kaopio’s 14 year old son, Maverick gave the presentation.

COL Doug Mulbury, the Garrison Commander and ROTC alumni with 26 years of service presented the Scholarship of Honor medal.

Following the presentation, the cadets who had accompanied James, including last year's awardee Haley Okamura toured the US Army’s Battle Command Training Center at Schofield Barracks, named in honor of Nainoa K. Hoe.

When notified of the scholarship award, James was surprised and very honored. “I’m humbled and honored to receive this award and excited to learn and grow and hopefully continue in the Warrior Battalion's tradition of exemplary service as an Army Officer,” James said.

Pop Artist Nicolosi, special guest at 11.11.11's Celebration of 'What's Right with America"

One of Hollywood’s most acclaimed artists, Nicolosi, will be unveiling three of his original works of art which he created exclusively for our 11.11.11 auction.

This 9-11 10th Anniversary Commemorative Portrait is one of the original works of art that will only be available at the 11.11.11 auction.

Nicolosi joined forces with the Brian LaViolette Foundation after having learned of its mission and dedication to celebrating the indomitable spirit of American ingenuity and all that is right with the United States of America.

In addition to his celebrated works of art which are privately commissioned for such luminaries as American Presidents, Clint Eastwood, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Gary Sinise, Helen Mirren and a who’s who of Hollywood’s “Glitterati”, Nicolosi has been the preeminent artist for all of the Major Award shows in Hollywood, including: The Golden Globe Awards, The Academy Awards, The Grammys, The Emmy’s and The SAG Awards.

Margaret Viola presented the Tom Hudner Scholarship of Honor at EAA

Margaret Viola graduated from the University of Chicago in 2010 with a BA in Physics and is currently working as a science teach in Somaliland, East Africa.

She is participating in Flight Lessons to obtain her private pilot's license. Margaret was presented the Tom Hudner Scholarship of Honor at EAA Airventure, one of "The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration" in Oshkosh, WI.

Welcome New Board Member Lou LeCalsey!

We are excited to welcome the newest member to the Brian LaViolette Foundation Board of Advisors… Lou LeCalsey III.

Lou is the immediate past President and CEO of a publicly traded company, Tufco Technologies headquartered in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He continues as a member of its Board of Directors.

He grew up in Philadelphia, PA where he graduated from Franklin and Marshall College. He still holds the record for most goal keeping saves on the soccer team. He later attended UW-Oshkosh for his Masters in finance and marketing.

Lou is very involved with UW-Green Bay and currently serves as the founding and current Chair of the Chancellor’s Council of Trustees for UW-Green Bay and Chair of the UW-Green Bay Foundation Board of Directors. He was also the founding head soccer coach in 1969-1970 and was inducted in the Phoenix Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.

Lou served six years in the Marine Corps where he was a Platoon Sergeant in Force Reconnaissance parachute and scuba qualified special operations unite and saw deployment in the Cuban Missile crisis and the early days of the Vietnam War.

He is very involved with the community. In addition to what was mentioned above, he is a member of the Advisory Board of Bradford Ventures in White Plains NY and has served on the board of the Green Bay YMCA, TriMark, Inc and Independent Printing Company.

Lou and his wife, Sue, have been married over 32 years and are residents of Ledgeview, WI. They are actively involved with the breeding and showing of champion Boston Terries.

Donation to General Patton Scholarship of Honor in honor of Past Hero

George Thompson

A donation to the General George Patton Scholarship of Honor in Pilsen, Czech Republic was made in honor of George Thompson and the men of the 16^th Armored Division, by George's son-in-law, Dale Rieb. George Thompson spent three years on active duty in the United States Army and continued to serve by staying in the reserves earning retirement as a 1^st Sergeant.

The skills he learned in the Army provided him a lifelong career as a mechanic. He remains actively involved in the 16^th armored division annual reunions. George made his first trip back to the Czech Republic in 1991 and has attended the liberation celebration eight times visiting and making new friends.

If you ask him about the war he says they were just doing their jobs and that he only made a small contribution to the war effort. He will also tell you he has great respect for the Czechs and they have always impressed him with their optimistic outlook on life despite all the country has been through.

The 5th annual Brian LaViolette Scholarship was awarded to Nikhitha Murali at the Partners in Education Youth Celebration.

Nikhitha is an incredible young woman who has already accomplished so much, including organizing a medical/health camp in a small village in India. She plans to follow her medical passion as she pursues a degree in Neuroscience with a pre-med focus at the University of Chicago.

There is nothing like Spring. Winter dissolves into green grass, budding flowers, the growth of vegetables and warm breezes.

Springtime for Brian's Foundation represents the end of the school year allowing new beginnings for many--students gear up for the end of the school year, teachers plan end of the year exams, and parents prepare for their 'baby' to enter the real world.

Like spring every year, Brian's Foundation has new growth-45 new scholarship recipients become a part of our every-growing garden. Budding young men and women enter the next phase in their life and go through all that is yet to come like a warm breeze.

Past Scholarship Recipient has earned the title of Miss Wisconsin

Kimberly Sawyer, a past scholarship recipient of the Brian LaViolette Scholarship went on to be crowned Miss Wisconsin in June of 2010. Her story is pretty remarkable…

This was her second try at Miss Wisconsin, as she had been Miss Door County in 2008 and hadn't placed that year. But she didn’t give up..her reward was being crowned Miss Wisconsin last year. As it turns out, her sister Katie also competed at Miss Wisconsin that year, and was her first runner-up! A first in Miss America history!

Kimberly earned a Bachelor's of Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance and a minor in Spanish. She also played on the St. Norbert College softball team, and was a captain during her senior year when they won the conference championship.

As she continues her journey as Miss Wisconsin this year, she has had amazing opportunities and unforgettable and inspiring memories. She represents the Miss America Organization which provides $45 million in scholarships every year to young women across the country, and is also involved with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

She also promotes her personal platform entitled "Service for the Soul" which promotes volunteerism and the importance of matching volunteers with organizations that match their passions, their goals, and schedules so that they may become life-long volunteers with those organizations.

With so many appearances as Miss Wisconsin, her most favorite thing to do is speak to students. She shares with them the importance of believing in themselves and their abilities, dreaming big, setting goals, and making good decisions to reach those goals.

Brian's Foundation becomes a Public Charity

Brian's Foundation has officially become a public charity as of January 1, 2011. We were established as a private foundation 18 years ago when we awarded one scholarship in memory of Brian LaViolette. Now awarding over 40 scholarships worldwide annually, the foundation has legally become a public charity.

Public charities typically carry out the same type of direct, charitable giving as private foundations. The true definition of a public charity, though, goes well beyond the programs and into the realm of structure and revenue source. One advantage of public charities over private foundations is the ability to attract support from other public charities and private foundations.

We are happy that this status has gone through and we look forward to what it will bring to Brian's Foundation. Thank you all for your support through the years!

Friendship leads to establishing scholarship to remember local doctor

“To sum up Kenny in a few words would be a tribute to a great man. Kenny simply cared about all of God’s children. Those special enough to have met him are all better off because of his caring. His caring spirit must serve as a guide for all on how to live life. Because of Ken, we must all care about the people we meet. In this way we honor Kenny’s life.” –John Lochner, a good friend of Kenny’s.

Dr. Ken Kubsch, grew up in Kellnersville, Wisconsin where he graduated from Manitowoc’s Lincoln High School. He graduated from Marquette School of Medicine in 1968 and first worked as a doctor of Internal Medicine and made many house calls.

Kenny loved the Green Bay Packers and attended games regularly through the years. In the 70s Kenny served as one of the Packer doctors for one year. In 2006 Kenny retired from medical practice and enjoyed his retirement. Sadley, he passed away one year ago today.

The Ken Kubsch Scholarship was created to honor a caring and humble Board certified family and internal medicine doctor who was simply called Kenny. In the spring of 2012, a scholarship will be provided to a student at Manitowoc Lincoln High School who is interested in history or science , both passions of Kenny.

John and Kathy Lochner, along with Dan and Carrie Whetter, good friends of the Kubsch's have contributed the seed money to establish this scholarship.

A father's proud moment

Board Member, Tony Mitchell is only 33 years old, but if you saw his ‘life’ on paper, you would guess he had lived an entire life thus far.

For starters he and his wife April have four children; Anthony, Alexander, Abraham and Annabelle. Enough said.

Here he is with two of his boys helping at the Quantico and Gettysburg wreath project paying tribute to Eric McColley, who we honor with a scholarship at Gettysburg High School. Fellow Board Member, Stan Clark plays the key role in Eric's Scholarship and wreath project.

Tony enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves in 1996, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in May 2000, with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and a minor in Political Science. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Marine Corps through the Platoon Leaders Class (PLC) program. After tours in Okinawa, Japan and two visits to Iraq, Tony reported to Green Bay in late summer of 2005. While in Green Bay, he was very active with Brian’s Foundation- helping at Packer Games, honoring his fellow Marines and also played a key role in the Medal of Honor Convention in 2007.

On a serious side, one of Tony’s many duties as a United States Marine remains to honor Gold Star Families and our Fallen. Tony conducted Casualty Assistance Calls Officer duties five times while in Green Bay.

Honoring United States Marine Corps Cpl. Brent Vroman, who paid the ultimate sacrifice in 2004 serving his country. Brent has a scholarship in his name at Omro High School in Wisconsin, which is sponsored by John and Kathy Lochner.

Tony started his masters’ degree in Military History through Norwich University in Vermont, moved to California when he was deployed to Afghanistan. He was the Company Commander for a Combat Engineer Battalion and returned just over a month ago, when he was able to meet his daughter Annabelle for the first time.

But one of his prouder moments happened last week when he was promoted to Major. His three sons, did the honor of ‘pinning’ him, while April and his daughter Annabelle looked on.

The Mitchell’s plan is to stay in California until summer of 2012. And some day Tony’s dream is to be the Mayor of Green Bay. :)

No matter where Tony is stationed, he remains active with Brian’s Foundation. We couldn’t be more proud to have him involved in not only sharing Brian’s Story, but the story of all those we honor.

Brian's Foundation feels fortunate to have created a partnership with the Nidzica Foundation in Poland. For 7 years, we have awarded life-changing scholarships to students in Poland to support his or her educational journey.

I might have discovered the answer in a small town in the Czech Republic

I recently had the privilege of attending the Liberation Celebration of the City of Pilsen in the Czech Republic. May 6th, 2010 marked the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Pilsen by General George Patton's 3rd Army.

My good friend Bob Nueske, was relentless in making sure I experienced what he had a couple years ago. We both had served in the United States Army back in the late 60's, and not far from this city.

This trip was life changing for me in so many ways, the events of May 1-9 touched me so deeply I wanted to share the following snapshots I took to explain why. Why Pilsen and why every American should visit this city. Because.....

They love America and the American Soldier...

Including this American family's private time to honor and remember their American hero.

This is the crash site of Lt. Virgil P. Kirkham, the last recorded American USAAF pilot killed in Europe during WWII. It was Lt. Kirkham's 82nd mission and one that he volunteered to go on.

At the time this 20 year old pilot's P-47 Thunderbolt plane was shot down, a young 14 year old Czech girl, Zdenka Sladkova, was so moved by his sacrifice she made a vow to care for him and his memory.

For 65 straight years , Zdenka, now 79 years old, took on the responsibility to care for Virgil's crash site and memorial near her home.

On May 4th she was recognized by the Mayor of Zdenka's home town of Trhanova, Czech Republic, for her sacrifice and extraordinary effort to honor this American hero.

Another chapter in this important story.....the Czech people are teaching their children about America's sacrifice for their freedom.

American Soldiers, young and old, are the ''Rock Stars'' these children and their parents want autographs from..

Yes, Rock Stars ! ... As they patiently waited for his autograph, the respect this little Czech boy and his father have for our troops serving today was heartwarming and inspirational.

After witnessing these magical moments Bob Nueske asked how could we not start a scholarship in Pilsen?

We're proud to announce The Brian LaViolette Foundation has established The Scholarship of Honor in tribute to General George S. Patton and the American Soldier, past and present.

The General George S. Patton Scholarship of Honor will be awarded annually to a student who has graduated from one of the 40+ high schools in Pilsen, Czech Republic, and who has chosen to enter the military or pursue a career in public safety or community service (e.g. police, firefighting, emergency medical services, healthcare and medicine, education, social work, humanitarian work, church or religious service)

Each year, a different military hero will be honored in tribute to General Patton's memory and their mission to liberate Europe. The first award will be presented in honor of Lt. Virgil Kirkham, that young 20 year old P-47 pilot killed 65 years ago in the final days of WWII.

Presenting Virgil's award will be someone who knows the true meaning of service and sacrifice... someone who looks a lot like Virgil...

In closing... Here is what the city of Pilsen thinks of General Patton's grandson. George Patton Waters ( another Rock Star! ) we're proud to say, serves on Brian's Foundation board.

And I was lucky enough witness all of this... Doug LaViolette along with a new friend, Brigadier General Miroslav Zizka - 1st Deputy Chief of Staff - Ministry of Defense - Czech Armed Forces.

Two Oconto High School Received Scholarships to NWTC

Shelly Schaub awarded Tom Hudner Scholarship of Honor at EAA

It was another special year for the Tom Hudner Scholarship of Honor presentation at the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh Wisconsin. Shelly Schaub received the award paying tribute to Medal of Honor Recipient, Tom Hudner. She attended last years presentation when her good friend, Irene Trujillo, received the scholarship. This year was her turn. Shelly graduated from Ripon High School in 2008 and is now attending the University of Eau Claire as an Elementary Education major. This summer she obtained her private pilots license. Her dream is to teach students, inspire them to follow their dreams and include flying in her career.

This year, we were grateful to have our good friend and member of Brian's Foundation Board, George Patton "Pat" Waters, help present. Pat is the grandson of General George Patton. He enjoyed his day at EAA, where the focus this year was honoring our Veterans.

Congrats Shelly! We know you will follow in the footsteps of Tom Hudner and make a true difference in this world.

Donation to General Patton Scholarship of Honor in honor of Past Hero

In May 2011 we will present the General George S. Patton Scholarship of Honor for the first time in the city of Pilsen, Czech Republic.

To help perpetuate this scholarship, we received the first donation for the endowment from Kathy and Mickey Hoffman following the lead of Bob Nueske. The Hoffman's met Doug LaViolette in his recent trip over the anniversary of the Liberation of the Czech Republic by General George Patton's 3rd army in 1945. (See the previous blog post for more information on the Liberation festival.)

Since the scholarship will be awarded to a High School Senior who will be entering the military or a form of community service, the Hoffman’s made their contribution in honor of Kathy’s father, Charles Robert Lemmons. He served as a MP in the 16th Armored Division during the European campaign. In civilian life, his career spanned 36 years on the Police Force in Covington, KY. He never missed a day of work, retiring in 1979 at the age of 65 with the rank of Lt. Detective.

Kathy stated, ‘that he always told them that we are only on this earth to help people and that is how he lived his entire life.’ The Hoffman’s definitely have the same values as Charles Lemmons. Thank you for all you do.

"The Journey is the Reward" to the World Cup

As many of you know Brian loved soccer-playing it, watching it and being a part of the different teams he played on. Neil Buethe was one of those teammates that Brian became close too.

A couple weeks ago, Neil approached us, to our surprise, as the Senior Manager of Communications for the U.S. Soccer Federation.

He told us that he has never forgotten Brian and their friendship. He wrote : " his inspirational story has stayed with me for all these years. I actually still keep some of the material about the "Journey is the Reward" that was handed out during his funeral in my wallet as a symbolic way to keep Brian with me at all times."

He went on to say that Jay DeMerit, defender for the U.S. Soccer World Cup Team, had an amazing journey on how he got to where he is today. For Neil, it really speaks the phrase "The Journey is the Reward."

Jay began his soccer career at Bay Port High School in Green Bay, Wisconsin where he graduated from in 1998.

Jay didn't start playing soccer until his sophomore year in high school. He then played at the University of Illinois. After graduation, he decided to take advantage of his European Union work status (due to his Danish grandfather) and moved to England in 2003. He started off playing in the ninth tier of English football for Southall Town F.C.
In July 2004, DeMerit joined Northwood, a seventh-tier team, to play in some of their pre-season matches. He went on to sign a one year contract with Watford that season and has been a regular in the Watford lineup ever since. Jay played in all of the World Cup games for the United States.

Wow. Not starting soccer till he was 16 years old to a ninth-tier team to the World Cup... "The Journey is the Reward" is fitting.

Jay visited Green Bay and his alma mater, Bay Port High School on July 9th where he signed and talked with hundreds of fans. Jim Schmitt, the Mayor of Green Bay, presented Jay with a key to the city and delcared July 9th, 'Jay DeMerit Day'.

After a long day of signing hundreds of autographs, Jay was kind enough to meet with Brian's Dad, Doug LaViolette and signed a few soccer balls, just liked those used during the World Cup for the Brian's Foundation fundraiser efforts.

We can't tell you how much it meant to us that Neil reached out and for keeping Brian and his Foundation in his heart after all these years. We felt honored that Jay also showed his support and believes in the mission of Brian's Foundation.

We are so touched that Jay has joined in on Neil's journey, our Journey and Brian's journey.

4th Annual $10,000 Brian LaViolette Scholarship

After interviewing six outstanding students from six different high schools in the Green Bay area, we had a hard decision to make. All of the students were more than qualified to receive the $10,000.00 Brian LaViolette Scholarship. All will make a difference in this world-all for different reasons.

It was one of those years (like most years) we wish we could present all six with Brian's scholarship, but in the end, one stood taller to us- Brigitte Juppe from DePere High School.

Brigitte will be attending Marquette University in the fall with plans to major in biomedical science and minor in Spanish. She'd like to continue her education at medical school and enter in the medical field as a bilingual Neonatalogist or Family Practitioner. We have no doubt that wherever life's journey takes her, she will make a positive change in this world.

In her essay she states: "The recipient of Brian's scholarship needs to keep his memory alive and serve as a positive role model, both of which I feel I am capable of accomplishing by working hard to obtain the successful future life I know he would have led." We know Brigitte will make us and Brian proud.

Robert Foley Scholarship of Honor at West Point

The LTG Robert Foley Scholarship of Honor at West Point was presented on May 18th to a Cadet who excels in all areas, despite personal hardship while a cadet. This year, the honor was awarded to Cadet Todd Lambka.

CDT Lambka is an inspiration and a true role-model for cadets and other young adults. He serves as a great example of personal determination.

After CDT Lambka received the award, he wrote a very long, heartfelt letter part of which included:

I am humbled and extremely honored to be chosen to receive this significant award, the LTG (R) Robert Foley Scholarship of Honor, and I am equally touched that I can now be part of the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation and can only promise that I will serve humbly and honorably to the best of my ability in Peacetime and in combat in part to honor the memory of Brian and all that he did on earth, as well as continue the proud tradition in joining the Long Gray Line and living “DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY.”

Today, I finish on significant chapter in my life, graduating from West Point, but I begin to embark on a more significant chapter… leading soldiers in our Military, representing the greatest Nation… indeed, as I begin my life as an Officer in the Profession of Arms… it is clearly evident to me… the “Journey is the Reward!”

Junior Achievement Business Challenge

Brian's Foundation has been awarding a scholarship since 2004 at the Junior Achievement’s (JA) Business Challenge in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

This years' scholarship went to Maikou Lor. She is a freshman at West DePere High School. Maikou enjoys writing, reading, drawing, listening to music and hanging out with her friends. She is also involved in Art Club.

JA's mission is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, understand business and economics, and be workforce-ready. JA brings economics to life by providing K-12 students the marketable skills they will need for future success. Adult volunteers facilitate hands-on activities directly with students during the school day using curricula prepared by JA.

Update on Past Brian LaViolette Scholarship Recipients

Nick Kulkoski, the 2009 Recipient of the Brian LaViolette Scholarship is studying at New York University. His first year is going well. He is taking advantage of what the big city has to offer, meeting a lot of new lifelong friends and undertook 18 credits in his first semester. This semester he is taking Calculus III, Principles of Financial Accounting, Microeconomics and others..nothing like starting strong! He plans to join the Actuarial Society as soon as he begins taking classes towards his major of Actuarial Science.

He writes, "None of the experiences I have and will encounter at college would have been possible without the help of Brian's Foundation. I would like to thank you again for all of your help and I look forward to spending the next three and half years of schooling with you."

Ben Fischl, the 2008 Brian LaViolette Scholarship is currently at the United States Naval Academy. Before his appointment began, he spent some time in Rwanda with some mission work, which he states 'changed his life'. He is back at the Academy studying Arabic, Military History, Law, Economics, Engineering Mechanics and will start flying gliders next month! He is enjoying his time and like Nick, taking full advantage of his learning and life experiences along the way!

Legendary Leader

Have you ever met anyone that seems to take your breath away by how generous they can be? Our family and Brian's Foundation are fortunate to know many..we are sometimes surprised we are even able to catch our breath on certain days.

Remembering Not Only a Hero, but a Great Man--Len Keller

Vietnam Medal of Honor Recipient, Leonard "Len" Keller, 62 was laid to rest November 30th in Arlington Cemetery, over a month after he was killed in a motorcycle accident.

Brian's Foundation had announced in 2008 and was in the process of completing the endowment drive for the Len Keller Scholarship of Honor at Guilford High School in Rockford, IL. Len was going to present the first award.

Len was killed only minutes after being honored at the U.S. Navy Fleet Reserve Association in Pensacola, Florida. He was a two-tour Army veteran and recently retired after a 28-year career as a civilian in the supply unit at Pensacola Naval Air Station.

Sergeant Keller was cited for heroic action in May, 1967 when his unit was assaulted by superior enemy forces near Ap Bac, South Vietnam.

Saying goodbye to an American Hero at Arlington-Doug LaViolette

"What humbled me the most on that rainy Monday was after everyone left Len's Memorial service. I had the privilege to privately say goodbye. Here in front of me, was a bigger than life American hero, being laid to rest in these hollowed grounds at Arlington in the basic military issued casket...nothing fancy. But then there was nothing Len would have liked more than to be treated like every other soldier he ever served with. I can guarantee he did so with respect and his soldiers respected him.

We promised Len we would honor him perpetually with the Leonard Keller Scholarship of Honor at Guilford High School in Rockford, Illinois...we will keep that promise. We will miss Len presenting the first scholarship this coming May, but we will never forget..."

Local Medal of Honor recipient dies at 62
Len Keller killed on Sunday in motorcycle accident

A Milton resident who was a Medal of Honor recipient died Sunday in a motorcycle crash as he was leaving a veterans club. Leonard "Len" Keller, 62, died at Sacred Heart Hospital after the accident outside the Fleet Reserve Association in Milton. Keller served for two years in Vietnam, then worked for 28 more as a civilian in the supply department at Pensacola Naval Air Station.

Capt. Bill Reavey, commanding officer of Pensacola NAS, called Keller's death "a national loss."
"Len was a very humble guy. What he did was just amazing," said Reavey, who spoke at Keller's retirement party in December."If you met him and then you read his citation, you'd never know it was him. What he did was super human. He saved numerous lives that day."

Keller served as an Army sergeant in Vietnam. President Lyndon Johnson presented him with the Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony in 1968.The Medal of Honor is the nation's highest military honor. It is presented by Congress for risk of life in combat beyond the call of duty.

Keller received the medal in recognition of "conspicuous gallantry" as he and another soldier came under fire from the Viet Cong in a number of enemy bunkers and in nearby trees. "Sgt. Keller quickly moved to a position where he could fire at a bunker from which automatic fire was received, killing one Viet Cong who attempted to escape," according to the citation.

"Leaping to the top of a dike, he and a comrade charged the enemy bunkers, dangerously exposing themselves to the enemy fire," according to the citation. He then charged a second bunker, killing its occupant, and five more bunkers, killing the enemies in them.

"During their furious assault, Sgt. Keller and his comrade had been almost continuously exposed to intense sniper fire as the enemy desperately sought to stop their attack," the citation reads. After his ammunition was exhausted, Keller returned to his platoon to assist in the evacuation of the wounded. "His acts are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army,'' the citation states.

Upon retirement, Keller placed his actions firmly in the midst of those performed by his fellow soldiers. "I'm not any different than any of the other people who were there," he said in an interview. "I just received a medal. A lot of guys out there deserved medals too, they just didn't make it."

Sunday's crash occurred at 3:18 p.m. as Keller was leaving the fleet center on his Harley Davidson three-wheeled motorcycle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Keller made a sharp left and "was traveling too fast for the turn and left the paved surface of the road," the Highway Patrol reported. The motorcycle overturned several times and came to final rest on top of Keller. He was not wearing a helmet

Amy graduated from Notre Dame High School and St. Norbert College and has recently returned to school after having 5 children.

Bellin College is dedicated to preparing health-care professionals by providing an intellectually stimulating environment focused on leadership, community service, and lifelong learning that promotes excellence in health-care practice and the advancement of the profession. Scholarship Recipient Following in his Family’s Footsteps and Local War Hero

Mikael Anthony Torres, a 2009 graduate of Waipahu High Schools in Oahu, Hawaii was awarded the 3rd annual Nainoa Hoe Scholarship of Honor on August 28 at the 1Lt. Nainoa K. Hoe Battle Command Training Center located on Schofield Barracks.

It was a special day for many reasons, especially because it would have been Nainoa’s 32nd birthday. The scholarship honors the memory and service of 1Lt. Nainoa Hoe, of Maunawili, Oahu, who was leading a combat patrol in Mosul, Iraq when he was killed in action on January 22, 2005.

The scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman in the University of Hawaii’s Army ROTC “Warrior Battalion.” The Warrior Battalion ROTC program is singularly unique as it is authorized to display a “Campaign or Battle Ribbon” earned by the Cadets in Defense of Hawaii in WWII.

Mikael’s selection recognizes his scholastic abilities and JROTC leadership. The eldest child in a “Career Army Family” young Mikael learned at an early age the true meaning of “Duty, Honor, Country.”

Today’s Army Family presents many challenges, parents on deployment, multiple moves, attending different schools and adjusting to a life of uncertainty and stress. The motto “Army Strong” is meaningful only in conjunction with “Family Strong.” Mikael is a shining example of both.

This scholarship is made possible by Waimanalo businessman and Brian LaViolette Foundation Board member, Ohelo Kaopio.

Medal of Honor Recipient, John Finn turns 100

Happy 100th Birthday John!

John Finn was born on July 24th, 1909 and is the oldest of the 96 living Medal of Honor Recipients. He enlisted in the navy in 1926, following his 17th birthday. John had to have his mother sign him up because he was so young.

Even though he only had a grammar school education, he became an Aviation Ordnance man and worked his way though the enlisted ranks, finally being promoted to Chief Petty Officer in only nine years. John received a commission in 1942 and retired as a Lieutenant in 1956.

He earned his medal for actions at his Naval Air Station during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Admiral Chester Nimitz awarded John his Medal of Honor in ceremonies on board USS Enterprise. His citation was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

He is one of our nation’s treasures…and true American hero. Happy Birthday John!

One of a kind Jeep Golf Cart--signed by Medal of Honor Recipients

When the living Medal of Honor Recipients were invited to Green Bay, Wisconsin for their annual Society convention in 2007, we started working on a unique way to escort them around the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, where they were staying.

This new Golf Cart was turned into a replica of a military Jeep that carried our troops into battle from World War II through Vietnam.

The Golf Cart is signed by the majority of the Medal of Honor Recipients who attended the 2007 Medal of Honor Society Convention. It was the first time the group of living Recipients were on Wisconsin soil at the same time-it truly is priceless.

3rd Annual Brian LaViolette Scholarship Awarded to DePere High School Graduate

"As always, it was a hard choice, but Nicholas shares the same core values as Brian did and we know he will go onto accomplish great things. He has been very active in helping the community and his peers, he is humble, a leader, genuine and respectful. " Doug LaViolette stated.

This year's $10,000 Brian LaViolette Scholarship was presented to Nicholas Kulkoski, a student from DePere High School, at the Partners in Education Youth Celebration.

The selection process included a committee made up of representatives from Partners in Education along with the LaViolette family who narrowed down 18 high school seniors’ applications--one outstanding student chosen by selected staff from each high school in the Partners in Education school district. The committee then narrowed it down to five students who were interviewed.

Nicholas will be attending the University of New York to pursue a degree in Actuarial Science.

New Board Member--Stan Clark, Gettysburg, PA

Not only did he raise over $40,000 for the Eric McColley Scholarship of Honor Fund at Gettysburg High School, but he has one of the biggest hearts anyone can ask for. He is pictured here with Medal of Honor Recipient, Wes Fox in 2007 at the first Eric McColley Scholarship of Honor presentation.

Stan served in the 2nd and 3rd Marine Divisions, as well as recruiting station duty in the Harrisburg, PA area. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1976 after six years of active duty service.

Stan has lived in Gettysburg, PA with his wife Candi for the past 24 years. Stan worked in real estate and construction industries until 2003 and is currently involved in the antique and military book business. He is also a member of the the Gettysburg Battlefield Detachment of the Marine Corps League, Forty & Eight and is active in various Veterans activities and programs, in particular the Wounded Warriors and also a Board Member of the SGTMAC Foundation.

Our family has known Julie for 23 years, when her and Kim became friends in the first grade. She also knew Brian and has been involved with his Foundation from the beginning.

We can't count the number of times she helped us with copy editing, special events (some of you may recognize her as our 'right-hand' woman from the Medal of Honor Convention) or whenever we need her. She is definitely a person you can always count on!

Julie is a creative writer for Enzymatic Therapy, Inc.-the nation's leading dietary supplement company, located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. She also does freelance writing for area newspapers and other publications, and volunteers her time as a Wish Granter for the Make a Wish Foundation.

Julie enjoys any activity she can do outdoors, and loves spending time keeping her husband company in the kitchen - while he cooks. She is also an avid reader, and a huge fan of anything that makes her laugh out loud. Julie lives in DePere with her husband, Justin, who also loves a good laugh. They were married last August.

The LaViolette family met Arni in 1992 shortly after his family had moved to Green Bay to start Bayside Christian Fellowship Church in Green Bay. Arni and his congregation became devoted supporters of his Foundation. He continues to support as he serves on Brian’s Foundation Board of Advisors.

Arni is a pastor, mentor, church planter, motivator, author, father, and grandfather. He has more than 30 successful years in ministry and has built dynamic churches in Merrill, Wisconsin; Salt Lake City, Utah; Salem, Oregon; and pioneered a church of more than 3,000 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Arni and his wife, Jan, have two children, and are very proud of their grandchildren.

"By Remembering One, We Honor All"--John McColley

John and Susan McColley spearheaded the National Wreath Project with the help of Stan Clark of Gettysburg. The parents of Eric McColley who was killed in the War on Terror in February 2006 started placing wreaths on his grave around Thanksgiving of 2006.

Each time they visited the cemetery with a new wreath they would place the existing wreath on the grave of a neighboring Marine. They noticed that many of the other graves were not being decorated and from that day forward they decided to honor as many as they could. In 2006, they placed 515 wreaths.

This year, with the help of so many, they were able to put over 2700 wreaths total- 500 wreaths on grave sites at Gettysburg National Cemetery and over 2,100 at Quantico National Cemetery.

The Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation was so proud to financially support this noble and worthwhile cause. Foundation Board Member, Captain Tony Mitchell and his two young sons (above) helped with this effort.

The Eric McColley Scholarship of Honor was established in 2007 at Gettysburg High School and is awarded to a graduating student going into the military or a form of community or public service.

Katherine Cathey was 5 months pregnant when her husband James was killed while conducting combat operations in Iraq on August 21, 2005. On her son's first birthday, United States Marine Colonel Steve Beck presents Jimmy Cathey with the Scholarship of Honor medal in honor of
his Dad, USMC 2nd Lt. James Cathey.

The inscription to little Jimmy on the back of the medal reads: Your selfless service, heroic deeds and love for your Marines will never be forgotten. From this day forward, the manner by which you lived your life, with enthusiasm, with vigor, and with an energy rarely witnessed, will forever stand as an inspiration to those who take on the noble challenge of serving their fellow man. “Happy 1st Birthday Jimmy, your daddy is watching over you.” 22 December 2006

The James Cathey Scholarship of Honor was established at Reno High School and first presented in 2007. Thanks to the Remembering the Brave Foundation, this will be a perpetual tribute to James. Maybe one day James' son, will present this scholarship in honor of his Dad...what a great honor that would be!

Dad had the chance to meet Katherine at the Medal of Honor Patriot Dinner in Denver this past September where she was recognized as a Gold Star family.

"First Tee" Scholarship Recipient Heads for College

Five years ago, Brian Summerfield, received our $1000 First Tee Scholarship at the Brian LaViolette Leadership Camp. Brian's Foundation partnered with the Golf Foundation of Wisconsin (GFW) in 2001 . The GFW provided children across the state with affordable and accessible facilities to have the opportunity to learn not only about golf, but also about the values the game promotes such as integrity, patience, honesty, self-confidence and leadership. The Camp was created to mirror the ideals of excellence, hope and perseverance that Brian held dear.

Brian Summerfield received the scholarship when he was 14 years old and is now heading to the University of Milwaukee.

Scholarship Helps Aviation Student Soar

Wesley “Rhett” Kicklighter grew up in Georgia, looking to the skies. The accomplishment that he is most proud of is obtaining his Private Pilot’s license. And he has a lot of accomplishments to choose from. He worked his way through the ranks in Eagle Scouts and earned the God and Country Award, which allowed him to devote additional time for public service. Kicklighter was also involved in many other clubs and organizations.

It was that commitment to his community and country that earned him another honor during the EAA AirVenture Convention the last week in July in Oshkosh. Kicklighter was selected to receive the fifth annual Thomas J. Hudner Scholarship of Honor. Hudner was a fighter pilot in the Korean War and a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his bravery of his actions on December 4, 1950.

“I am honored to be awarded this scholarship. Thomas Hudner is a devoted, compassionate man and his actions were very commendable. My goal is to learn from the actions of people like him, continue my education and to strive to be a leader in my community.” Kicklighter stated.

Kicklighter is putting the scholarship money to good use as he attends Georgia Tech University this fall as an Aeronautical Engineering major. But his ambition and his desire to give back doesn’t stop there.

Upon graduation he plans to continue his education at Graduate school and has set a goal to obtain his Certified Flight Instructor rating. After college he will enlist in the National Guard.

“Rhett was chosen for his commitment to his country and community, the same qualities that Tom possesses,” said Kim LaViolette, Executive Director of the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation who created and endowed the scholarship.

The Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation is teaming up with the artistic creators of Sugarboo Designs out of Roswell, Georgia to unveil The Journey Collection-a collection of Sugarboo customized wood frames for those treasured photos that inspire you. The collection features the foundation’s trademark… “The Journey is the Reward" and a famous quote from Ronald Reagan.

The handmade, hand-painted, wood photo box is a piece of art in itself, that is only waiting for a special 4” x 4” keepsake photograph to make it truly unique.

The first “The Journey is the Reward” photo box was presented to Tonight Show host Jay Leno on the set of his comedy program in Burbank, California on February 8, 2008. Jay was chosen for his compassion toward the foundation early on when he endorsed the book, by the same name, written by Brian’s parents Doug and Renee and sister Kim, about the struggles in losing a loved one. Jay being an avid car collector with over 200 automobiles, was presented this specially designed photo box including a picture of a young Mr. Leno with his first new car, a 1965 Buick.

Rebecca Puig, owner of Sugarboo Designs with her husband, Rick on why she decided to support Brian’s Foundation, “I read the book and I was very inspired by the story of how a family and community came together and turned something so heart wrenching into something beautiful... First Annual Presentation at West Point

Cadet David Kennedy is the recipient of the first annual Robert Foley Scholarship of Honor.

This award is presented to a Cadet who has overcome difficult circumstances while attending the Academy. In the summer of 2005, David was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis (MG). This disease affects the neurological system and with a successful surgery,thankfully Cadet Kennedy was able to overcome this challenge and return to USMA in January 2007. Upon graduation, Cadet Kennedy was commissioned an Officer in the United States Army.

Special thanks to Midwest Airlines for making this trip possible for Doug LaViolette allowing him to participate in the ceremony and meet this dedicated young man and his family.

“Our community is fortunate to have many talented young people, and Ben Fischl is certainly a young person to make us all proud and optimistic for our future,” said Nancy Schopf with Partners in Education.

Partners In Education had the difficult task of helping select this years recipient. The Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation presents its annual $10,000 college scholarship to a graduate who not only excelled in academics but possessed a passion for learning and a desire to give back to his or her community.

Fischl is Seymour Community High School’s valedictorian for the Class of ’08 and will graduate in June. He has been accepted into the Air Force Academy and plans to study political science and economics.

“As if I wasn’t excited enough to go into the Academy, now I have a great legacy to carry with me,” Fischl said referring to Brian LaViolette and the Foundation.

A selection committee made up of representatives from Partners in Education along with the LaViolette family narrowed down 17 high school seniors’ applications--one student chosen by selected staff from each high school. The committee then narrowed it down to five students who were interviewed.

Partners in Education, through the Green Bay Chamber, promotes the values of education and a lifelong love of learning, emphasizing the need for post-secondary education. This year Brian’s Foundation is nearing a milestone by awarding its 400th college scholarship.

New Scholarship of Honor at West Point Academy

We are proud to announce a newly established Scholarship of Honor at the United States Military Academy at West Point. This award will pay tribute to a living Medal of Honor Recipient, Robert Foley. The first annual Robert Foley Scholarship of Honor at West Point will be presented during the Commandant’s Awards Convocation at West Point Academy on May 27th, 2008.

United States Army Lieutenant General Robert Foley’s bravery in combat above and beyond the call of duty while serving his country during Vietnam earned him the nation’s highest honor for valor. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on November 5, 1966.

The scholarship will recognize a West Point Cadet who has gone through difficult circumstances and overcome obstacles while a Cadet. He or she will have established themselves as a true “leader of character” excelling in all four developmental pillars-Intellectual, Military, Physical and Moral-Ethical while at the same time reflecting and epitomizing the motto of West Point – “DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY.”

Why in honor of LTG Foley? And why at West Point? The week of Brian’s funeral, a letter arrived from West Point inviting Brian to consider applying to the United States Military Academy. At that time Brigadier General Robert Foley was Commandant of Cadets. It is easy to see how in General Foley’s life he also made his journey the reward through his commitment to his country, family, the Academy, and accomplishments along the way.

A Special Donation...

Through the generous support of the Weyers Family Foundation of Green Bay, Wisconsin, the endowments for 20 Scholarships of Honor established in 10 states will continue to solely fund their respective scholarships. The costs to maintain the scholarships are being funded by the Weyers Family Foundation through an annual preservation pledge. This preservation pledge helps with annual maintenance costs which include: the Scholarship of Honor Medal, engraving, presentation box, shipping, framing (like the one pictured right) etc. This allows only the scholarship award money to be taken out of each trust fund annually. This is the single largest donation that Brian’s Foundation has received in its 15 year history. In addition, the Weyers Family Foundation is also the proud sponsor of the John Bradley Scholarship of Honor endowment and two annual Poland Scholarships. We can not thank the Weyers Family enough for their support in our Journey and the lives of so many others.

As much as our family and board members would like to attend every scholarship presentation, the cost to do so would not allow us. But with the kindness of Greg Aretakis, of Midwest Airlines, we've been fortunate to participate and share in some of the scholarship presentations that take place coast to coast.

Sue LeTourneau, a member of our Foundation Board and also our family, has been a HUGE Packers fan her entire life, but after we started the Foundation, she began to tailgate for a reason. Brats for Brian has been a staple in the Lambeau Field parking lot every home game for years. With the help of many others and Nueske meats, Packers fans and opposing team fans (yes, even Viking fans) have walked away satisfied and touched by the story of Brian’s Foundation. A few weeks ago, Sue was approached by Sports Illustrated and later interviewed for an article they were having on Brett.

At a fund-raiser for Green Bay's Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation, Favre came on stage to play drums with the house band. "When that happened, a bunch of us old ladies in the crowd started screaming," says Sue LeTourneau, who helps run the scholarship program named for her late nephew, who died in a swimming accident.

The Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation has selected 2007 Damien High School graduate Justin Sambueno of Kalihi as the first recipient of a $1,000 college scholarship that is being awarded in the name of Army 1st Lieutenant Nainoa Hoe of Kailua who died January 22, 2005 while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Hoe’s father, Allen Hoe, and Army COL Matthew Margotta, Garrison Commander of Schofield Barracks, presented the scholarship today to Sambueno during a ceremony at the 1st Lieutenant Nainoa Hoe Battle Command Training Center at Schofield.

Hoe, 27, was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division based at Fort Lewis, Washington. He commanded a platoon while serving in Iraq—a command that fulfilled a life-long dream. He was with the platoon as it was patrolling Mosul on January 22, 2005, urging Iraqi citizens to vote in upcoming elections and searching for insurgents, when he was attacked by enemy forces using small-arms fire.

“Community service is just as important as education because it encourages people to help their community which can create better environments for people to learn and then they may branch out and help other communities until it becomes contagious, in a healthy way,” says Sambueno. “In the future, I hope to help people live better lives and create healthier communities by any way possible such as creating charities, donating to charities, or producing something of great help to society.”

The $1,000 scholarship, endowed by Waimanalo businessman Ohelo Kaopio, is being awarded to Sambueno through the Wisconsin-based Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation which has awarded hundreds of scholarships, in honor of fallen war heroes, since 1992 to students across the United States and around the world who are interested in pursuing military and public service. Kaopio last year also endowed a LaViolette scholarship in honor of the 27 Kaneohe Marines who died in a helicopter crash in Iraq the week after Hoe was killed.

Thank you to everyone that helped make the 2007 Medal of Honor Convention a success. 62 of the 109 living Medal of Honor Recipients were our guests in Green Bay from September 3-10th. They all arrived and departed safely and we had wonderful feedback from all the Recipients, their families, and other guests who were able to be a part of our community for a short time. They could not say enough about the hospitality of Green Bay...thanks to hundreds of volunteers and donors, they will have great memories of our city. The Recipients are not the only ones that have great memories-our local students and others in the community were able to share in the week.

South African Scholarship of Honor Presented

First $10,000 Brian LaViolette Scholarship Awarded

On May 31st we presented our first $10,000 Brian LaViolette Scholarship through Partners in Education at the Youth Celebration. Brittany Van Remortal from Bayport High School received the award. It was a hard choice, but we know we made a great one. Brittany will be attending Wheaton College to major in German and Biology with a concentration in cellular research. Her goals for her career are to become a scientist and perform cellular and molecular research to find cures for prominent illnesses.

The 2007 Medal of Honor Convention, which is spreadheaded by the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation, will be held September 3rd-10th. All living Medal of Honor recipients will gather in Green Bay for the 2007 Congressional Medal of Honor Society Convention. The recipients’ annual gathering takes them to a different city each year. Phoenix in 2006,.last year—Boston. Next year—Denver. This year—Green Bay!

The Medal of Honor is the highest award for Valor in action against an enemy force that can be bestowed upon an individual in the United States Armed Services. With the financial support of businesses and individuals from across Wisconsin and the Nation along with hundreds of volunteers, The Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation is leading this weeklong convention and will be inviting the Medal of Honor recipients during their visit to take part in public activities throughout the community from school appearances to a Green Bay Packers Game. New $10,000 College Scholarship, Available to Northeast Wisconsin Students

Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation and Partners in Education are excited to announce a new $10,000 college scholarship for 2007.

The Brian LaViolette Scholarship is designed to offer a student the inspiration to succeed and the financial backing to help make higher education possible.Open to all graduating seniors in the Partners in Education school districts, this $10,000 award will go a student who has shown exemplary achievement throughout his or her high school career. The total amount of the scholarship will be paid in equal installments over four years.

The criteria being evaluated will include academics, leadership and community involvement…aspects of life that were important to Brian while growing up and attending school in De Pere. The recipient will be a student who has a thirst for knowledge, the ability to be a team player, and the desire to be a future leader.

The announcement of the new Brian LaViolette Scholarship on this day, January 23, 2007, falls on what would have been Brian LaViolette’s 30th birthday. To mark the Foundation’s 15th year of giving, the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation has consolidated several local scholarships to provide this one in Brian’s name, but the mission remains the same: “To honor hard work, community service, offer inspiration and share the belief that “The Journey is the Reward.”

Brats for Brian!

This is the ultimate tailgating! This is "Brats for Brian." I have gotten to know this group pretty well. They raise money for a scholarship in the name of Brian LaViolette. Brian was just 15 years old when his life was taken in a swimming accident. His family wrote a book about taking the good and healing from the pain. They went on to live it by creating a scholarship for other teens in their son's name. Brats for Brian is an extennsion of that love from friends and family. They are in the parking lot for each Packer game and sell delicious brats to continue the dream. They are awesome folks and I encourage you each to swing by and meet them. James Cathy, 24, Reno, NV

In 1998 James graduated from Reno High School in just three years. He went into the Marine Reserves at the age of 17, and worked hard at the University of Colorado to earn a BA in history and anthropology. He was husband to Katherine who was 4 months pregnant when James was killed in Iraq on August 21, 2005. Their son, Jimmy was born on December 22, 2005. He also leaves a loving daughter, Casey, who is now 9 years old. James was looking forward to getting back home to be with his wife and new baby.

Joe Welke, 20, Rapid City, SD

Joe graduated from Rapid City Stevens High School in 2003. While in high school, Joe played football for four years. His senior year he earned the Greater Dakota Conference All Conference and Honorable Mention All State. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, hunting, fishing, camping, weight lifting, and cars. Joe was proud to be a United States Marine. Joe’s football coach, Joel Hybertson stated, “If we need someone for our Country, I want someone like Joe Welke”. Joe’s plans of moving to Southern California were cut short when he was killed in Iraq on November 20, 2004.

John Bradley Remembered With

Gone, but not forgotten. The memory of John Bradley and his devotion to community and country will live on with a special scholarship being established in his name at Appleton West High School.

The John Bradley Scholarship of Honor will pay tribute to this brave and courageous man who served his country as a Navy Corpsman medic in World War II. Bradley received the prestigious Navy Cross for his bravery in saving lives at Iwo Jima. He was also one of six service members who raised the American flag on Iwo Jima in that famous photo seen around the world.

This scholarship has been made possible by Ron and Colleen Weyers of the Weyers Family Foundation. Thank you Weyers!

1998 Scholarship Recipient...becoming a Doctor!

Mark Gaulke, a 1998 DePere High School graduate is currently in a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residence at The Marshfield Clinic-St. Joseph’s Hospital Program in Marshfield, WI. Mark graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin in May of this year. He got his Bachelor’s degree in Human biology with a health science emphasis at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 2002.

During Med school he was able to experience a two-month course in Malawi and Zambia, South-central Africa. He worked with the Mwembezhi Lutheran Rural Health Center. “It was amazing,” Mark said. “The Lutheran Rural Health Center brought these two country together with both language and cultures.” Mark worked and observed at a 25-bed hospital, which he said was more like free clinic. “Next to the hospital was a preschool where all kids 6-8 years old. All of their father’s were dead. All have AIDS. All Mal-nutrition. The only green grass they see everyday is at that preschool.” His time in Africa was not only educational, but life changing.

Mark will spend two years in the Pediatrics Program and two years in Internal Medicine. After he become Board certified in 2010, he plans to stay in Primary care. “Ideally, in a rural area in Wisconsin.” What an exciting journey!
